We thought we’d spend maybe 4 days in La Ciudad de México. Oh how we were wrong. This city grabbed us from the very first taco, and never let go. Whether it was getting lost in the tree-lined streets of Condesa, riding bikes around the cobbled streets of Coyoacán, or eating so many tacos we couldn’t move, we were constantly wonderstruck in CDMX.
Wondering what the best things to do in Mexico City are? Well, there’s just so much to do and see in CDMX. Be sure to check out our full city guide here.
Teotihuacan – the ancient Mesoamerican city near Mexico City, known for its massive Pyramid of the Sun, grand Avenue of the Dead and mysterious origins.
Coyoacán – riding around cobblestone streets in Mexico City’s oldest district and soaking up the history, including Casa Azul – the Frida Kahlo residence and museum.
Anthropology Museum – an amazing complex and museum that we found really fascinating. Go for a walk around the huge Chapultepec park to make this a half day activity.
EAT
Tacos Tacos Tacos! Seriously, it’s hard to go wrong in this place. Though if you twisted our arm and made demands, our top three places would be:
El Pescadito – some of the best fish tacos we tried in the country.
Cariñito Tacos – Asian fusion tacos for something a little bit different.
Tacos Hola El Güero – featured on Netflix’s “Taco Chronicles” this is a great budget place full of locals.
STAY
With hundreds of places to choose from, we stayed at a couple, but loved this great budget hostel right in the middle of Condesa.
Hostal Fungi Casa Rosa – perfect location, friendly staff, comfy beds and a nice little roof terrace to enjoy at the end of another day doing 20,000 steps.
We were probably the most excited about Oaxaca since before leaving on our trip, and we’re happy to say that it really lived up to the hype.
DO
Our favourite thing to do in Oaxaca was just wander around getting lost and taking photos. UNESCO listed, it’s a photographer’s dream.

EAT
The food in Oaxaca is often referred to as “the best in Mexico”, and while we can’t necessarily confirm that, it is undeniably delicious.

STAY
Niyana Eco Hotel – Our third accommodation in the city, but definitely our favourite was this eco-stay just 10minutes walk to the centre. They offered yoga, delicious local kombucha and had their own vege garden.
Historically a laid-back surf town known for epic waves and its bohemian vibe, but what we saw was a town on the brink of over-development and tacky party culture. We found the days to be more enjoyable than the nights for this reason, and luckily we had the perfect oasis retreat to spend our time.
The prices were gringo-tier here but we still managed to find a few good options that didn’t break our budget.

It was HOT and HUMID, and we just had to get an Acai bowl one day.

Our amazing oasis accommodation, which really made our stay in Puerto enjoyable.
One Love Hostel – palm trees, a plunge pool, yoga deck, hammocks and spacious private rooms with nice ensuites. Just beautiful!
20 minutes down the road from Puerto Escondido, this little beachside village is much more laid-back than it’s big brother. The combination of beautiful beaches, cute cafés and fresh seafood made this a real highlight of our trip.
We found the best fish and shrimp tacos of our trip here, and unashamedly ate there 3 nights in a row.

For brekky, this was the place to be and it’s easy to see why. They have the vibe and a GREAT menu.

We went for a really budget option in Mazunte, as prices can be high.

This is a huge region with a lot of variety, so we opted to skip Holbox, Chichén Itzá, Cancún and Tulum in favour of some less touristy areas – and we’re confident we made the right choice. We swam in cenotes all alone, wandered around Aztec temples without being hassled by vendors and managed to keep to our modest budget without an issue.
Delicious tacos in the heart of Mérida.

A must-try street food in this region is the Marquesitas con queso (sweet crispy pancakes with cheese).

You might already be getting spammed by countless drone shots of this picturesque lake on Instagram, and rightly so. The colours and atmosphere of this lagoon make you feel like you could be on a tropical island, it is really unique. For now, it is still a laidback town that hasn’t been tainted by big resorts or over-tourism seen on the coast further north.
Argentinian empanadas in Mexico? Yep, and having tried them in Argentina, we can say they were pretty legit.

The marquesitas here were the most epicly-garnished creations we saw.

Our accommodation was cheap and cheerful with a super friendly owner who even picked us up from the bus stop.
